The
Port of San Felipe (sahn feh-LEE-peh), Baja California is just a two-hour
drive from the U.S./Mexican border and has been targeted by the Secretary
of Tourism of Mexico and FONATUR (National Trust Fund for Tourist Development),
to become one Mexico's next international resort towns. Previously, when
such towns as Cancun, Ixtapa and Los Cabos were targeted, these once-small
fishing villages became world-class destinations.
San Felipe is nestled between the picturesque San Pedro Martir Mountains and the beautiful Sea of Cortez. Known by all off road aficionados for its endless miles of outback terrain, it is also very popular with the sport fishing crowd, recreational water sports enthusiasts, beachcombers and naturalists.
San Felipe has sunny skies, gentle evening breezes, and bathtub-warm ocean waters that can reach 86-87 degrees in August. And for beachcombers, the 23-foot tides expose a half-mile of ocean floor. In fact, San Felipe places third in experiencing the largest tidal bores in the world, due in part to the Colorado River delta to the north.
In the past 20 years its economic base has widened with the growth of tourist activity. Today, San Felipe is a thriving community of more than 20,000 permanent residents, with an additional 10,000 from the United States, Canada and Europe. The town is of sufficient size that pretty much all of the goods and services enjoyed by larger cities are offered here.
